#Mastodon interaction lessons-learned:— Be authentic.— Like life, everyone is on their own journey and timeframe. Don’t compare yourself to others in posting frequency or content.— Follower counts don’t define your/others’ value.— When deciding between engaging and withdrawing, err on the side of engaging.— Sometimes, threads you’re mentioned on just conclude. Your presence didn’t cause it to die.— An ongoing conversation among mutuals isn’t purposefully excluding you. Most likely, they’d be happy to have you join in.— Sometimes, people will stop interacting with you. As long as you weren’t being a jerk, it’s probably not about you, and you need to just let it go.— Likes are unlimited. Go ahead and like that post; it’ll make the author’s day a bit brighter.— If your post doesn’t receive likes, it’s okay. Your awesome post just got lost in the shuffle.— Lifting up others feels really f$*cking good. Whether on Masto or elsewhere, aim to find yourself in a community where this is the norm.

@charliebrownau @adamcr I like deltachat for the use case of connecting people who are already connected through e-mail (and are willing to install deltachat). But there are other chat alternatives that I also like:matrix for connecting communities (with various clients available)simplex and session for providing some metadata protectionbrair for providing a tool that is useful for activists, journalists and whistleblowers right now (in combination with grapheneos, WiFi and opsec)#grapheneos #matrix #simplex #session #briar #deltachat #privacy #metadataprotection #opsec

@charliebrownau @adamcr Thanks for sharing!I hadn’t heard about ribbit yet. There is also https://beechat.network/ which uses xbee or zigbee. It supports mesh networks and supposedly post quantum encryption. Low data rates.

@charliebrownau @adamcr Personally I would get a pixel 6A if I had to get a phone right now. Multiple years of security updates so the price per year is actually quite low for a relatively modern device that can run grapheneos. Alternatively the pinephone (pro) with mobian is also really nice for testing or development.#pixel6a #grapheneos #mobian #pinephone

@charliebrownau @adamcr Pixel6a seems expensive but in price per year (divide by years of security updates you will get) it is cheaper than or equal to most phones. The bigger problem is that I personally do not want to promote Google or give them any money. But for an activist, whistleblower, journalist who wants to protect his privacy/safety and needs a phone this seems like a moot point. Best is of course not to have a phone at all.Briar on top of grapheneos without a simcard is a pretty easy combination to get some level of protection for some threat models.See: https://endoflife.date/pixel#grapheneos #briar

@charliebrownau @adamcr Delta Chat is a nice alternative for people wanting to connect to their existing email networks. But Delta Chat doesn’t do anything for meta data protection.Whereas Briar has been auditted and runs everything through the tor network.Simplex is also nice to keep an eye on. It is in heavy development and not really ready for the general public I would say. SimpleX has a different approach. It uses relays. You can tell it to only use tor relays.

@charliebrownau @aijooyoom @adamcr I am also no fan of rust. Every time I’ve tried to build a project in it, cargo complains about some bullshit or another or needs a very specific version of the nightly build for an obscure feature. Also, all out-of-channel package management is just a mess IMO. No python pip. No npm. I want none of that bullshit. Also, and I know I’m criticizing my own link here, things that make me weary of trusting tools built by Nym:They have a CoCThey have built a convid passport tool (in the guise of making it “more private”. No, you fools, how about we don’t do Orwellian passports at all?)

@aijooyoom @charliebrownau @adamcr It would be nice if there were a condom (such as with invidious or nitter) for github, so that git projects which have foolishly chosen to remain on enemy infrastructure could still be safely viewed by passerbys.I’ve held off putting my own projects on any git because protocols are infinitely superior to platforms. But Forgejo might just be exactly what I was looking for.
