This is something I've noticed, there is no Mute function, which would be much better.. All forms of muting is done through a report of spam/inappropriate, which seems to add a user to a universal block list. Seems p unfair @460c25e6

Don't bug people if you don't want to get marked as Spam. They are free to mark your posts and reduce your reach to their followers. They can also delete the report if it was made by mistake. In Nostr you are free to say whatever you want, and people are free to rove you from their feed. There is no universal ban.

Getting ass blasted because you can’t defend your points shouldn’t escalate up to “now everyone sees your posts as spam” I feel. My understanding was that that was not what Nostr was intended for.

There is not "everyone". The message is only shown as inappropriate when you follow somebody that reported the person. And if you follow that person, it invalidated the report.

As someone else mentioned, I don't need to copy someone else's blocklist. I don't need someone else deciding for me what I can and can't see. I shouldn't have to follow someone to see what they're saying just because randomuser123 and his friends decided they're spam.

So basically on Nostr, if you mark someone’s posts as spam, everybody who follows you will take that on board and potentially hide all posts from the reported person over that. This is apparently how Nostr handles content moderation: by federating jannying.

If you can suppress someone’s messages every time they make fun of your ButtCoins then it’s hiding them. I don’t know who created this feature but if it really exists it’s facilitating the construction of echo chambers more than normal free association would. Using it probably makes you a faggot.

why? there is so many relays to use, the idea you need you own relay is a very fedi thing, nostr will go p2p at some point, which is self hosting but as easy as running a client

what reason is there not to host your own relay? i can mald from my own personal relay, i don't need to shit up other relays for that. from my understanding it's also good for the health of the network, "at some point" isn't now though it could be a year or more into the future. in either case the relay isn't the important part it doesn't seem that difficult to do per the github.
