@MountainJay I have had 3 batches of chicks. None of them ever wanted to get picked up, no matter how much we handled them as small chicks. Is this atypical, or perhaps I need to get the eggs, and let them imprint on us after hatching?

@MrsShill @MountainJay I have had Rhode Island Red, Golden Sexlink, Barred Rock, Creme Legbar, Buff Orpington and Novogen.The Golden Sexlink and Novogen are the least shy, but still will try to ecape if I want to pick them up.https://purelypoultry.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1421To me, Novagen and Gold Sexlink look about the same, and behave about the same.They both are the most likely to eat from my hand.

@Viking — this lady’s videos have been very helpful. I used to train working dogs, and her behavioral advice all seems sound to me.Our first batch we got at a day old, directly from the hatchery, so were able to have them imprint on us. We also followed her advice about how pick up and hold them so it’s a nice experience. (Like not holding too tightly or on their back.) About 2/3 are still friendly and very easy to handle, while a 1/3 have matured to be more flighty.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WdIEogscr8g

@Viking — oh, and the breed we have are Dominiques, which tend to be on the friendlier side. Thankfully our roosters have all turned out to be very sweet. We’re down to just two now, and one of them loves pets and snuggles. He runs across the yard for attention, loves to be picked up, and will sit on my lap for as long as I’ll let him. He’s still not quite a year old yet, so hopefully he’ll stay sweet. 🤞
