Why has anti-trans bigotry failed so miserably here compared to UK and US? Genuine question

@johnquiggin I wonder if it's partially explained by Australia's more-even wealth distribution*? Perhaps this means there are fewer disenfranchised, impoverished people looking for someone to blame* I know: it's worse than I'd like it to be, and worse than it used to be, but still significantly better than both the UK and US.

@johnquiggin A most intriguing question. Do you have an explanation?Promoting hate of minorities is a classic right-wing way to draw attention away from their true policy: the further enrichment of the already rich. So why doesn't that also happen here in Oz?

@johnquiggin It's a good question. Not sure about UK, as it's been 10 years since I lived there and it wasn't a hot topic back then.In the USA, it's definitely entwined with religion.

@johnquiggin this argues that it's far from a success in the US either, at least, when voters are able to pass judgement on it knowing what it involveshttps://ettingermentum.substack.com/p/the-modern-electoral-history-of-transphobia

@EdelweissBlood I wouldn't say it was fully successful, but it's the dominant position in the Republican party and gets respectful treatment from centrists. Here, it's out on the fringe, literally, with Nazis.

@johnquiggin Don't know if this answers the question entirely, but acceptance of LGBTI+ rights has continued to move forward in Australia, through active campaigns - most obviously equal marriage. Which also saw the right wing trying to whip up a storm of hate and generally flopping.

@johnquiggin there's a few decades of history of it being pushed (in its modern form) in the UK and the US, with their efforts only hitting the mainstream of the hard right quite recently to gain attention over issues like immigration etc. Other countries are well behind in this, and might never catch up, but the British terfs in particular definitely have international ambitions, e.g. Twitter pile-ons aimed at New Zealand trans activists

@johnquiggin maybe cause we don’t have a strong Christian right, but then that doesn’t explain the uk. Maybe cause we don’t have public figures coming out strongly anti-trans. ?
