The general idea these companies have is that they want to tie in game items and characters to NFTs and make some sort of marketplace to trade them on.It's like lootboxes but you can trade the contents of said lootbox with other players in a speculative market where the company who made the NFTs gets a cut of each transaction. It is a highly predatory monetization strategy and should be pushed back against wherever it rears its ugly head

Pretty much, except the company promises you that you can "play to earn" which essentially means working a second job by playing a ton of hours in their shitty "game" to earn funny money which may or may not translate into actual money. Web3 shills will also have you believe that "you can transfer items between games because it is an NFT" or some bullshit like that but that will never be the case because why would developers spend so much extra time incorporating NFTs from other games into their own instead of just making their own set of NFTs?

Originally it was conceived as a way to transfer property deeds without having to go through a local county clerk. Then the Internet did what the Internet does and accelerated to the gayest possible use case: monkey profile pictures.Equippable video game items would work great as NFTs. Pokemon would be a great use case, since they can be unique with stat and skill buildups. Make the character sheet visible publicly, use the access key in-game to actually play with it.That assumes video game companies do it right, instead of stupidly, which I would never bet on.
