I was playing a game yesterday and shared this lewdish acronym that my friend didn't know, and he goes "On that note, goodnight"

@calculsoberic If it helps, my mind immediately goes to the kink when I see it mentioned in mental health contexts.

@jccpalmer it does help! I used to edit Urban Dictionary, so that's probably why my brain tends to go that way

@calculsoberic That'll do it! I just cringe at myself when my mind goes to the kink instead of the very effective psychotherapy methodology.

@jccpalmer Oh, yes, believe or not, I've had the psychotherapeutic version too!

@jccpalmer yes, I had a brain tumor when I was 14, and after the surgery, I had a lot of short term memory, processing, and emotional issues. But in 2006 I found an amazing CBT therapist who really helped my memory and other brain skills. I really think she got me to where I am today.

@calculsoberic Well, I'm glad to hear about your recovery. CBT is extremely effective from my research and I have implemented some of its techniques in my own life. I deal with a severe mental illness, so I take any tools I can to ensure I live a good life.

@jccpalmer Thank you! But you have to practice to "maintain" it, right? I currently use a lot of things like calendars, password managers, navigation tools, etc. to help 😺

@calculsoberic I have found that most things in life require constant practice, even things where we have a lot of talent. Psychotherapy, from both my research and experience, requires constant practice to undo years' worth of negative thinking patters, trauma responses, etc. Just like any skill!

@calculsoberic It can feel like there's no way out, no hope for the future (don't get me started on the concept of hope), and so on. But just like coding, playing a game, building something, constant practice will see you meet success in some form. It may be small at first, but it takes only a small step to make a change.
