@clive I'm an introvert and video calls are the absolute worst. Everyone is looking at you all the time, it's so unnatural. I tried them during lockdown and didn't find them very enjoyable unless I was dialing in to watch a presentation and I could turn off my camera. I use video calls now for work and like that they enable remote work, but for fun? Nope.

@clive A group of maybe 10 friends started doing a standing zoom happy hour still every Friday March or April 2020, and it is an incredibly rare week that at least a few people aren’t on, and usually 5 or 6 most weeks.

@clive At the beginning of the pandemic, I started zoom-calling (audio only) with my dad almost every evening. We would play two online games of Wordfeud (scrabble-ish) while chatting to each other. I started it as a way to ensure that he wouldn’t feel so isolated during the early lockdown days. Three years later, we’re at 1,676 games. And we’re tied, 834 - 8 - 834. :)

@clive @skrishna, In high school my son did a lot of his socializing while gaming with his friends. He'd be on the headset just hanging out with them and chasing zombies or whatever. I thought it was good for him even pre-pandemic.

@clive a friend and I restarted doing video calls while we watch something together. It’s been a pretty great time since we can plan around it more impromptu. It is also not nearly as awkward as a regular video call since we’re focused on something else together vs staring at each other through a screen.

@clive @anildash there’s a similar story in the NYTines this weekend. I couldn’t agree more. I feel like many of us have swung too far in the other direction. Needing connection doesn’t go away just the pandemic is mostly “over”. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/18/business/zoom-friends-socializing.html

@clive I’ve not read your article (added to my queue), but wanted to mention something other replies haven’t covered yet. There are many people who couldn’t attend social events before the pandemic, for a variety of reasons. An estimated 1.5-3.5% of the UK population is agoraphobic. 8% of the pop has depression. 6% have generalised anxiety. Etc.(These aren’t mutually exclusive.) For some of us, the pandemic was the first time we’d been able to socialise with friends in years.

@clive I'm an introvert and I definitely get Zoom fatigue sometimes. On the other hand, during the pandemic I started four weekly, standing Zoom chats with various long-distance family and friends that we've continued this whole time, and it's been wonderful having that. We could have been doing that long before the pandemic!

@clive I have definitely fatigued of work zooms, and mostly don't bother with the camera anymore but I do miss some of the social zooms. I was definitely more present with further away family and friends then. Early in the pandemic, my sister turned 60 and she and her husband went camping (west coast CA, so Wi-Fi) and we set up an elaborate 60th birthday party over zoom that went for hours and we all still talk about it now. One of our best recent family get togethers.

@clive I threw a Discord New Years Eve Party during quarantine and it legit ended up being a great time. A bunch of video rooms and categories themed after a house party, each with a max number of users so people had to float between conversations, one room was streaming the ball drop, one had music, one was for Jackbox, etc.

@clive I very much miss having these interactions, either one-on-one or the group parties. Everyone moved back to “normal,” so now all these people I reconnected with are back to their “normal” state of being gone.

@ozlubling This is a great article, too. I'm so glad we've moved beyond those terrible early days of the pandemic... but I do miss how creative we were in finding ways to connect then. It's like it showed how much we really value relationships of all kinds.

@sallyexactly both of these articles were great but I wish they wrote more about how to make the pendulum swing a bit back to those times. Just asking people to do zooms can feel weird and out of context now. But there must be a way to bring back the excitement and energy to connect with others not in your immediate vicinity.
