Partially inspired by @TedUnderwood 's toot https://sigmoid.social/@TedUnderwood/110044685578705752 I'm curious how much everyone is starting to pay for AI "tools"? It seems like the SaaS-ification of research infrastructure is accelerating, but haven't heard of libraries or universities buying access to something like ChatGPT-4 so assuming everyone is just eating the cost directly and wondering what that looks like.In full disclosure, I currently pay for Google Colab, Github Copilot, and Notion AI for a total of $30/per month. I'll probably drop Notion AI but the other two have been helpful for times when I need GPU access and when I have formulaic code to write. Considering paying for ChatGPT Plus access but that's another $20 and starting to wonder where this ends ๐ So if you feel comfortable sharing fill out this very unscientific poll please ๐๐ฝ #AI #DH #DigitalHumanities

@zoeleblanc Yeah, I'm starting to worry about this. Chat Plus = $20 / mo. Midjourney subscription $10/mo. AI Dungeon at least $5 -- I should probably drop it now. Just spent $22 on the OpenAI API. It adds up.

@zoeleblanc @TedUnderwood out of curiosity, whatโs stopping universities from setting up the infra to run Llama or Alpaca models โ with an api to control access / allow researchers to hit for free?Granted itโs not gpt4, but for research purposes, there are some pretty viable alternatives that do text and code completion: https://github.com/tloen/alpaca-lora

@chengyjonathan @zoeleblanc So, this is something I considered concretely in a recent grant application. I think it would be a smart thing for universities to do โ maybe in some consortial way? For me as an individual researcher it's more time-and-money-efficient right now to pay OpenAI $1-4k than to set this up.

@TedUnderwood @chengyjonathan @zoeleblanc Ok, I am sending Ted a copy of my 2022 tax return to remind him that not everyone can afford to use 4k that way. Seriously: are we witnessing a new era of the digital divide problem between researchers in different institutions (not to mention countries)?

@jose_eduardo @chengyjonathan @zoeleblanc Let me be hastily say that I mean grant money! But yeah, still. This this is why the !!๐ฌ!! is in there. Inequality between researchers in different institutions, and countries, and very likely between industry and academia as well.

@TedUnderwood @chengyjonathan @zoeleblanc Ah, sorry I misunderstood that! But still, valid question, eh?

@TedUnderwood @zoeleblanc yeah I agree wholeheartedly! I think universities have/should be thinking about the infra needed to host these alpaca style models for open access. Moreover, the research to build *better* alpaca style models for wider university research is worth its own organization. Now how to organize such a thingโฆ Get the NEH on the phone! ๐

@chengyjonathan @zoeleblanc Mellon has the money and should really be putting it on something like this.

@zoeleblanc Oh I forgot Colab. It's getting ridiculous.
