What's it like living in the USA as a Dutchie? 🇳🇱 🇺🇸Pursuing the American dream. The differences between American and Dutch culture. What is great about America? What is challenging?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVjBNTRRedo

"My monthly health insurance is about the same as the Dutch one on a yearly basis" :amaze: "Racism is sooo in your face here" (US)Not many plus points unfort, BIG downsides.. I think vacation or trip would be enough in the US. We'll stay within Europe with living

@stux I live in Canada, not sure why you would want to pursue an American dream. Have you watched any news lately? You are waaaaaaay better off not pursing that dream. Its not like in the movies, even Americans want to leave.

@stux As someone who has lived both, I can say that I prefer the European emphasis on quality of personal happiness over work. The order points are also accurate. There’s downsides, of course. But they’re not worth going into. Just minor gripes (open the fucking grocery on Sunday. Ppl wouldn’t mind shopping on their day off.)

@stux When I graduated with my degree, I had the option of pursuing higher academia options in Europe or the US. There's a reason why I didn't pick the US.My sister decided to opt for studying there for her PhD, and is now being crushed by health insurance issues, no job security, etc. I would never for a second consider relocating there.

The USA is just an overrated country and is of no interest, especially when you live on the European continent

@stux he doesn't go much into the upsides: the climate is just fantastic, the area is beautiful, and the career opportunities are limitless, in an environment of unimaginable possibilities and fundingi've been in the Bay Area/Santa Cruz area, not far from San Francisco, since 2001. Everything he says is true. But I could never have had a career like i've had in the Netherlands, and that in constant sunshine, instead of motregen grey...

@stux Well, legal immigration out of the US to most European countries typically asked for $50,000 USD in liquid assets, and in general either employment, or established family waiting for you in said country. I’ve been wanting to legally emigrate out for 20+ years. Safe to say here in the richest country in the world, half of my countrymen could not afford to leave. But at least as they keep fanning the flames of trans hatred around here, a few more refuge options open up..

@stux I laughed when he said you will get paid a lot, and then he mentions he's in high-level management. The income gap is huge here, the rest of us are struggling.

@stux I like what the Dutch guy that has been living in the USA said about politics & racism being way more in your face here. The political discourse is nauseatingly negative (from both parties) in the USA & as mentioned the lack of compromise. Americans are also generally more loud, selfish, & in your face about everything, in my experience. One thing not mentioned, were guns. USA has a weird gun fetish. Very interesting video!

@stux en toen werd het moeilijkI guess the good part is that it is not quite as crazy as San Francisco...the bad part is that the county together with Monterey and San Matteo counties, are among the most expensive for housing in the entire country, both in terms of rent and ownrent is quickly > $2000/m, houses 750K-1M+Of course, the closer to the beach the higher the numbers go. The good thing is that you're never far from one, though

@stux Good call. My wife and I live in the U.S. but have talked often about how cool it would be to live in Ireland or Germany (she speaks German like a native, as she was once told by a German customs official). We've never been to The Netherlands, but we've heard good things.

@stux This interview pretty much hit many of the things I experienced.1. Homophobia. 2. Racism. 3. Awful awful immigration officers ie ICE. 4. Health insurance and pharma rip-offs. 5. Depressing politics; I ran a non-profit and most politicians on both sides do not have an open mind or want to listen. 6. Food overloaded with sugar or salt. 7. Money comes before people. I was so relieved to leave and I never want to go back.
