Quite excited about getting a share of the new Ripple Energy solar park. Hoping to eventually get solar panels on my house, but if the sun doesn’t shine here hopefully it will down in England where the solar park is going to be! https://rippleenergy.com?ogu=16023&rtrfn=Neil-H (full disclosure it’s a referral link - knocks £25 off anyone that is likewise interested in investing, and £25 off of mine too).

@sheredom is it a lot of hassle/paperwork to install panels on your own house over there?

@aras @sheredom UK rules allow a reasonable amount of solar panel installation without any paperwork, unless you have a listed building (protected status) or are in a conservation area or national park. You can get around this by having a 'portable' system, e.g. I have 800W solar with 4.8kWh batteries on the grounds of a listed building in a conservation area :)

@dougbinks @aras the big problem up here is that there is very few suppliers and a lot of people have asked for panels. And I don't have a smart meter which limits the usefulness of any panels I would buy (I'm on the waiting list, but highlands of Scotland is often forgotten about).A typical solar installation has doubled in cost since 2020 up here too, making it unaffordable for most people here.

@sheredom @dougbinks ah right yeah. Here it’s similar: paperwork got much simpler over the years, but the demand for solar installs has risen drastically. And so has the cost of the installation labor, and waiting times.

@aras @dougbinks how have your panels worked out? I remember you did some lovely graphs on a post years ago now!

@sheredom that was 3.2kWp which was just enough to cover my yearly consumption. But consumption was only appliances, lights, computers (heating/water was gas). Now on the new house I put 9.5kWp since geothermal heating will use quite a bit electricity. Also EV car and all my gardening equipment is electric now. I expect that should also roughly cover my yearly consumption.

@sheredom I luckily managed to install it late 2020 right before the solar boom started here.
