We likely all have some tiny belief that people on the right—from the Carlsons and the Greenes to the local bigot yelling at school board meeting—are putting up a facade; that is, they don’t actually believe half the dangerous and/or deadly ideas they’re supporting. That may be true for some. But it not being true for all makes the some even more culpable for the actions of the others, and increasing their numbers as they slide further to the right each year. #politics

Because now, the most dangerous of the fringe have become the central drivers of policy/domestic concerns for a major party. Now, the most dangerous of the fringe become normalized as the new bar, and those beneath it see that it can go even lower. #politics

In my lifetime and memory, the GOP went from a party that loved guns, church, anti-abortion billboards, Reagan (for taxes and probably his allowing for gay people to die), and semi-quiet racism post-civil rights, to a party that endorses violence against migrants, cameras in school bathrooms, automatic weapons in school classrooms, violence against school faculty—with or without the automatic weapon—and one-hundred percent extermination of any non-christian beliefs from the US. #politics

(Obviously there’s a lot left out there for both the older and newer GOP, but brevity is the soul of thicc, as they say)

There’s talk about how the Democrats lost the farmers, and the GOP swooped into rural spaces, corrupting them into culture wars to keep them distracted from how GOP policy actually hurts them.Think someone wrote a book on it, titled something like, ‘Shut Up, Liberals!’ or something. Can’t remember. If that’s true (anecdotally, my state’s been pretty conservative its entire existence, no shifts I can see in data), then what made them so successful at it to gain increased power?

Is it that the GOP is so great at marketing and brainwashing, they somehow convinced millions of people in rural places to hate gays and threaten teachers? The US Rural Pop. In 2020 was 14%, or 46,000,000.If so, then why did this shift only work on rural populations? Did they just not try it in the cities? Or is it that their marketing and brainwashing powers only work in places with no more than one Walmart?

Maybe, if this shift did happen, it wasn’t brainwashing but simply perceiving what dogs responded to the whistle. And then amplifying their bark, while preparing nonpologies and conspiracy theories whenever they bite someone they weren’t supposed to, or in a way that made you look bad.

Now before you misread:I’m not saying all rural people are anti-trans bigots who want christofascism and direct access to school bathrooms. After all, I’m a rural people and I know several who are just fine, and plenty just live in the background not really caring or making a nuisance about politics.Just saying that the entire GOP strategy can be summed up as “get worse, see what floats”. And clearly enough has that we’ve gotten to this point today.
