       @stux This is how I've tried to explain purported (U.S.) Yankee (Northern, especially Northeastern) 'rudeness' to (U.S.) Southerners, who often complain about it. We're just being direct and to the point. If the truthful answer is "No", then "No" is the answer you'll get; we're not doing it to hurt anyone's feelings. It wouldn't surprise me if our habit was inspired by the sensibility of early Dutch settlers in our area.

       @stux My kid will go to NL for school next year 🤞 and I’ve been trying to explain this idea of transparency. I start with the windows of private homes - coming from a shuttered or sheer curtain society (not at all transparent) to a view straight into a main room through clean windows.

       @stux Nice metaphore with the coconuts. The book The culture map is available as audiobook in the online bibliotheek (comes free with your library subscription). Is ‘enthousiasm for free stuff’ also a coconut thing? Because it sure is applicable to a large proportion of Dutch people.

       @stux I encountered it a few times on holiday in Amsterdam. It didn’t seem rude, just honest.I tried to speak Dutch a few times and didn’t do well. I was very British and apologised for my poor Dutch. The response was usually “yes, your Dutch is not very good. I will speak English”. Made me laugh! In Britain we would usually avoid and criticism and put up with the unsatisfactory situation
