Bush and Blair weren't charged over Iraq. Neither was Putin for his many previous wars. What's changed(1) Invasion of Ukraine is a clear war of conquest, (2) Forced adoptions constitute genocide(3) Bar for charging war criminals has been lowered over timeEven if Putin never sees The Hague, this is a good step from ICC

@johnquiggin @ajsadauskas a few reactions:1. There’s still time2. Posthumous will be a 2nd-best option3. I remember being weirdly relieved that “Iraq: Gulf War II” was being talked about in open terms as “war”. It was strangely an improvement over the 1990s decade of interventions that didn’t want to use it — those may have been to allow certain trade routes to keep open, rather than PR squeamishness4. Putin did choose, domestically, to avoid the term — but the reason?

@johnquiggin 4) 2003 Iraq invasion did not engage in massive war crimes encouraged by leaders:- indiscriminate bombing- widespread rape- widespread torture of political suspects (yes there was torture by Intelligence units & Abu Ghraib)- deportations
