It’s popular to hate on grains these days. But grains raise a lot of feed for a lot of animals. Today I’m trying to finish up planting oats for forage. We’ll swath and bale this up in June. We’ll make a couple herbicide applications afterwards and in September plant wheat here. Hopefully we’ll get some rain here to get the oats growing well. We’ll need all the feed we can get.

@Mummabear and I guess I have to point out that oats are also a grass.

@Jabwyrill the problem isn't grains, its the herbicides poisoning the down stream consumers.

@ralphw If you are free this summer, come on out and cut the weeds by hand. When can I expect you? The weeds will start growing in about 3 weeks.

@bluehound this mindset is why we have this problem. False dichotomy between glyphosates and hand-weeding.I say the current herbicides are poison, and you say come pull the weeds by hand. How about we find an actual practical solution?

@ralphw Like what? And what are your qualifications? Myself, I own and operate the farm that has been in my family since 1872.I don't use glyphosate much anymore, it isn't that effective on what the problem weed is. And I suspect that you don't know much of anything about it other that what you've read off some website. Roundup/glyphosate is NOT a "new" herbicide, its been around since 1974. And it replaced a bunch of other very toxic herbicides.

@bluehound my statement is that current herbicides' toxicity is responsible for most of the issues most people would have with grains.Do you even disagree with that?

@ralphw Yes, I would disagree with that. You have to explain why there is no health signal among farmers and their children. They are exposed to industrial levels of the chemicals at the point of application.Take beef. First the herbicide is sprayed, 4 months later the crop is harvested(only the grain), months later still the grain is fed to the animal, and the animal grows for 1.5 years and is slaughtered. Somehow with all that dilution and time you think that could cause health impacts?

@ralphw What makes a poison is Dose and Duration. You have to explain how farm kids don't have a health signal, but eating something far removed from the application site does. And I would be COVERED in glyphosate spray when I was a teenager, that is how we controlled weeds back then, by manually riding on a seat on a steel beam attached to a tractor, and spot spraying the weeds.

@bluehound I hope you're right, since you and your families health is riding on it.
