Well, my last guinea pig, Pepper, died yesterday, one short month after her lifelong mate. I could not keep weight on her, and she was six years old. I don’t think I have the heart right now to raise more, but I have already been contacted about fostering some. I will see. Frankly, seeing a slow death through to the end was grueling. I think I would like to have anesthesia available for my next “exotic” pet, because even the housecall veterinarians here are really busy. (I don’t think she was conscious for most of it, though.)

@DoctorDee My mom is at the point where she refuses to watch another dog live a long life and die. Some live long enough to get dementia. I am not there, but I can see how enough loss makes a person timid.

@Hollahollara I know a couple of people who do hospice animal care--they adopt animals from shelters who aren't going to live long. I don't know how they cope, but I'm glad they do it.

@chilady2022 I believe we can be given hints, but it probably wasn’t enough with all the other mind clutter to make anyone act. I understand wanting to be there. You still have her sibling to care for, so you can put that care towards yourself and your pet.

@Hollahollara Her brother, Jub passed away in June of 2019 due to cancer. I miss both of them dearly.I have Vadim and Snoopy but I'm very afraid to lose them. I can't take any more.

@chilady2022 @Hollahollara It is so hard to lose our family members of the four-legged variety! A number of people on Mickey Z's substack -- he has written some about cats because his parents were very fond of them -- talked of seeing their deceased cats out of the corners of their eyes, and I have had this happen. On some level your pets may still be with you; ask that they watch over Vadim and Snoopy.

@Hollahollara My condolences. Grief is the penalty for living long and loving. Pepper lived a very long life and died of a broken heart. I've known humans who did that. It must have been a great comfort to her for you to be there with her, being her friend. I am so sorry for your loss.
