Question for all the Mastodon admins out there.When you started your instance, how did you advertise? Or did you even advertise? @CliffWade When I started handmade.social I made a post about its opening on my personal account utilizing appropriate hashtags relevant to the server's purpose. It was picked up and boosted around the fediverse and that's how we got the first members. From there it's just been word of mouth.

@jeannie Gotcha! I have made a post a day about it for the first few days then felt like that was something a lot of people would block/ignore/mute or whatever so I stopped posting about it. Not really sure the best way to go about it or if I should just let it grow naturally as myself and my other members engage in conversations and people see the instance name floating around.

@CliffWade You can also list your instance on https://instances.socialAlso, patience. You don't want to your server to grow too quickly. Slow and steady is best to keep up with things, especially if you're the only admin/mod. Your server hasn't even been opened for a fill month yet. Give it time. handmade.social has been active since November and it's got about 50 accounts, about 10 of which are consistently active.

@jeannie Thank you. Just listed my instance there as someone else had told me about that the other day and I forgot.Currently, and for the foreseeable future, sign-ups have to be approved by myself. This way I can ensure that growth doesn't have at a crazy rate of speed and I can keep the instance as safe and friendly as possible.

@CliffWade there are a few sites out there where you van list tour instance, but in my opinion the most important one stays joinmastodon.org. there is where to most people go look

@bergmeister Getting listed on joinmastodon.org is nearly impossible unless you have 500+ members, and even then, it takes an act of Congress.

@jcrabapple @bergmeister Interesting. How many users did you have at the time when you got it listed?With my instance only having 5 or 6 right now, I feel my chances are pretty low. But weird that most everyone I talk to says it's difficult to get listed there.

@jcrabapple @bergmeister @linkeddev Because our goal is giving new users a smooth and reliable start into the decentralized social network of Mastodon rather than simply promoting individual servers, we are generally not interested in promoting brand new and unproven servers, so the submission should not be your primary strategy of growing your community.That above is what makes me feel getting approved is going to be difficult.
