Another day, another anti-EV clown.“Who buys an electric truck?” “My gas mileage is trash even when I’m not towing anything”You just accidentally touched on one of the big answers to your own question. People like saving money on their energy bill.“Long-range towing with an electric truck sucks”Yeah, so if you’re one of those people that actually does a lot of long-range towing… don’t get an electric truck??Now as for the other 90% of truck owners…

@dave EVs with market pie division as it is now, are problematic for many.

@dave EV truggs are cool pieces of tech but they truly can't handle one of the main purposes of a truck. Hybrid makes a lot more sense, especially plug-in hybrid, as is typically the case.

@BowsacNoodle one of the main purposes of a truckDon’t make me bust out the chart again.(Source is Axios, so there’s an obvious political angle, but like 538 they’re usually pretty reliable when it comes to numbers.

@BowsacNoodle This doesn’t invalidate the assertion that that’s one of the ostensible purposes of a truck, but in practice the vast majority of owners rarely use those capabilities, probably even less if you broke it down by trailer weight and looked at the kinds of loads that generally only trucks are good for.

@BowsacNoodle But yeah, for the guy who does actually tow, a hybrid option makes more sense until we get some massive improvements in battery energy density, or at least charging times.

@dave Yup. And don't get me wrong: America loves BIG TRUGG even though we seldom use them to haul. It's just that when I do want to haul, I love having a truck. If I could have any (normal priced) vehicle right now, i'd go with a big people hauler SUV Hybrid, probably one of the new Toyotas with the crazy torque and HP.

@BowsacNoodle @dave If electric vehicles are good enough for the army, they’re probably going to be fine for civilians. Just one example. https://electrek.co/2022/10/07/us-department-of-defense-embracing-electric-military-vehicles/

@leftout @dave The military's biggest strength is logistics and deployment of said logistics. The free market ™ sucks ass at that because it's everyone in competition to "innovate" (steal market share) and nobody wants to submit to BIG GUBBERMANT setting a USB-esque standard for charger deployment and standard option with backwards compatibility. Not to mention our power grid has power GRIDS and adding mass adoption of EV in present state just accelerates Tragedy of the Commons. And the final point you obviously know— the military industrial complex is all about pork spending bills to enrich manufacturing in every state of the Union.Tagging @Boomerman because I'm sure he'll have some insight and fun comments on this.

@BowsacNoodle @dave The army sees hybrids as a stepping stone to EV. Do we all agree the army knows what the FUXK it’s doing?https://www.defensenews.com/industry/techwatch/2022/10/11/heres-what-industry-is-offering-to-meet-armys-electric-vehicle-needs/

@leftout @BowsacNoodle We’re not talking about for most consumers, for whom EVs would be great and the main barrier is still cost, we’re talking about truck drivers that actually tow.Motor Trend did a few tests with various-sized trailers, and found that the towing range is pretty abysmal. They were apparently going 70 (~115kmh), so you could do better if you dropped your speed a bit, but the reality is that you’ll struggle to go 120 miles (200km) while towing with one of these. If you’re only hauling to the next town over, or maybe only doing long-range towing once a year or less, then maybe that kind of range is acceptable, but there are truck drivers for whom it definitely isn’t.

@dave @BowsacNoodle You’re talking about a subset of towing at longer distances and that battery tech isn’t there yet. Ok? Why are we talking about that? Is someone asserting that full EV vehicles are able to replace every class of vehicle today?

@leftout @BowsacNoodle I mean, the thread is debating the merits of EV trucks specifically dude. I made the point that most truck buyers almost never do long-haul towing, but not all consumers are thrifty and only buy what they need. It’s still a reduction in capability, even if the reality is that most buyers use that capability so infrequently that they can probably just rent or hire a contractor when they need it.

@dave @leftout The type of person who wants a truck is not the type of person who wants to rent one or hire a contractor for their occasional real truck need. I'll tell you from experience that simply having a truck means you end up with more "needs for a truck" because you end up changing your thinking about what choices are available to you as hoc. This is why I love even small trucks like the Ford Maverick. Trunks are in general a waste of space on a car.

@dave i'm not against them, i just think they and all other new cars are overpriced for what they are. they are charging $25k+ for sheetmetal metal and plastic that isn't even worth $5k new. even used prices are ridiculous for what they are. looking forward to when they are commonplace and sub $1000 used and parts are near scrap prices. still gonna take a few decades for this to happen.

@moomin Most advanced goods are a bad value if we’re just comparing the sticker price to the raw material input costs. But there’s a lot more expense that goes into producing something like a car, a phone, etc.Car manufacturers have had pretty low margins for a good long while now. I know the state of the used car market is pretty frustrating (Thanks Obama, unironically), but the only people ripping you off are the dealers IMO.
