So one of my assignments this semester is an essay. For this essay I need to:>Select a current year issue>Analyse the issue and how 'society' has responded to it.>Describe the impact of the issue on bringing people to Christ and keeping them>Suggest ways that the issue can be responded to in your local contextSomehow I don't think my honest immediate response to the topic will go down well.My solutions will see me excommunicated from my church.

@Crux_Invictus Wanna race? Who can speed run getting booted from their church first? I think Rev. Lutheran and Corey Mahler beat us, but I’m happy to battle for the final place on the podium

@Crux_Invictus the only thing modern education teaches you is how to get through itJust do child rape by priests. It’s extremely easy to explain the response, why it’s an obstacle, and you can give a extremely feminised answer of talking through feelings and emphasizing safety and respecting the voice of children and victims.

@SaintGuinefort I don't think this is what Paul meant when he talked about racing to the goal.

@Crux_Invictus At various points he was clearly hoping that Christ would end it and that he could just have a rest. Currently I’m honour and scripture bound to keep trying, but it would be nice to be done with this nonsense

@SaintGuinefort I also can't run worth a darn unless I'm carrying something heavy.I sure hope that after all this forging we're going through we get a chance to be heat treated and relax.

@Crux_Invictus I'm going against the grain to suggest you discuss the sin of gluttony. Fat pride is a real thing and the fat activists get louder all the time. The majority of the population is overweight or obese, as we're all self-medicating with food to cope with this hellscape, so nobody dares bring up fasting or disciplined consumption and exercise as a spiritual issue. It's genuinely overlooked because it makes people profoundly shameful and they attack anybody who brings it up.

@TinyFern That is actually a pretty good idea and I could also pull examples from Muscular Christianity. Also probably a lot safer than the issues I was thinking of. Namely gender equality, social media or sexuality.

@Crux_Invictus >Select a current year issueHigh rates of obesity >Analyse the issue and how 'society' has responded to it.Caused by poor quality of food, widespread depression, hormonal imbalance due to environmental pollution, lack of emphasis on personal discipline and a general cultural embrace of lavish gluttony and sloth. Society has responded with: Fat activism, pretending weight cannot be controlled >Describe the impact of the issue on bringing people to Christ and keeping themThis is one area in which the traditional practices of the church are extremely countercultural - regular fasting, an attitude of self-control, asceticism, and of considering your own body as another responsibility which God has given you to cultivate and care for - nobody wants to hear that it's immoral to have a good time until your body is run into the ground. Like drunkenness, the biblical perspective considers it foolishness, wasteful and destructive. It's boring, it's hurtful, it's harsh truths which make people feel bad - and people already have lots of bad feelings about the church. In the aging, chubby congregations that remain, nobody wants to alienate everyone who is left. Nonetheless, this issue is ultimately another area in which we sacrifice ourselves to Christ - it is selfishness that drives us to the dopamine rush of bad food in large quantities and little treats to get through the day. We must set ourselves aside and dedicate our bodies to the kingdom as much as our souls. >Suggest ways that the issue can be responded to in your local contextIdk tell people it's bad to be fat and they should find more wholesome ways of coping with life stress

@TinyFern @Crux_Invictus Gluttony, in a Biblical and Classical sense has less to do with specifically food and more about general excessiveness like showing off one's riches and pride and tempting others to envy and covetousness. There are Scriptures about contentment and not over eating (Pro. 26:15), which are connected at time to gluttony (Pro. 23:20) though this passage in the Gospels I believes gets to the core definition of gluttony: 2 "Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 5 "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you." (Matt. 6:2-6)Think less of obese people, though they have issues like lack of self-control among others, and think of people like Mr. Beast or the disgusting mukbang trend on Youtube. In that sense, you are very correct that there is a major modern problem with glut.

@SuperSnekFriend @Crux_Invictus Nah mate that's pride you're thinking of. Gluttony is an obsession with consumption - which is rampant in our consumerist society. The man who buys far beyond his needs is the same as the man who eats far beyond his needs. Showing it off can overlap but isn't the same thing.
