In Germany, the situation for post-docs has been notoriously horrid: If you don't get a permanent position in 6 years—you're out. Your contract cannot be renewed. The solution the government just announced for this is:đŸ„đŸ„đŸ„Reduce the maximum post-doc time to 3 years.WTFQT CaroWagner_in: In den letzten Wochen und Monaten habe ich unzĂ€hlige GesprĂ€che mit InteressenverbĂ€nden, dem Bundesministerium fĂŒr Bildung und Forschung und

@tiagoThis is just horrendous. No additional support, no career development, no alternative career paths?! They just arbitrarily cut the limit to 3 years?!

@danielcolquitt Exactly. They claim it brings more “clarity”.If by 3 years you haven't made it, then it's clear you should get out and make other plans. It's the equivalent of controlling an epidemic by murdering everyone.

@tiago @danielcolquitt France had something similar: 4 years.

@DNPFred @danielcolquitt The past tense there is the big difference.

@tiago @danielcolquitt allow me to be clearer: this is still in place and has been for that last 7/8 years.

@DNPFred @danielcolquitt It's horrible. But France at least has a broad tenure track system: you can go from postdoc to MaĂźtre de confĂ©rences, and only later to Professor. In Germany, these intermediary positions don't exist — with the exception of rare tenure track professorships. So often you have to jump from post-doc directly to a full professorship. And now you're expected to do this in 3 years.

@tiago @danielcolquitt I'm not too familiar with the German system but I noted how difficult it is to get a position there. I found the Emmy Noether funding scheme to be stupid: set up your lab/group then 7 years later so everything and start again.France is very challenging nonetheless. You can become a maßtre de conférences but then your research slows down dramatically.I'm any case, my original message was to say, that these limitations in duration sucks.

@tiago are they trying to benefit other EU countries? It takes time and money to get a PhD and longer again to get a tenured position these days. While some may not want to stay in academia and will go into business, many will...but probably not in Germany.

@tiago I think they just got the sentence wrong in that advert. It says „reliable working conditions in research“ and it was probably supposed to say „outside research“ 🙄
