I have finally decided that I'll use #Matrix & #XMPP for those who are somewhat or is tech-literate (also with friends) and then use #WhatsApp & #LINE for family and tech-illiterate people 💬

@thedaviddelta I actually did try to convince them to use Signal, didn't work cause they were too comfortable with what they were using currently :/I decided to not pressure them cause it would result in some undesirable consequences

@asahi95 @thedaviddelta N.B. that WhatsApp, LINE, Signal, and XMPP all have #Matrix bridges, so you need to only run one account to communicate with them all.https://matrix.org/bridges/

@downey@thedaviddelta @asahi95So if I had #matrix, Can a signal user chat with me if I don't have #signal account? Are signal msgs #e2ee from signal user to matrix user or the matrix #bridge decrypts it then recrypts again onto matrix system?

@sammi @downey @thedaviddelta @asahi95 Signal is closed network, so you need an account, as the bridge need to act as an app and login for you.Matrix<>IRC bridge can do it without account on the other side for example.Bridge needs to decrypt and encrypt message, to translate it to other protocol (encryption protocol, Signal is using... Signal, Matrix is using megolm). So if you don't want someone to see your messages, you need to host the bridge yourself or we need to wait for some way for bridging without the server (P2P or client-side bridging).

@asahi95 One thing that worked for me was to offer to set up the Matrix/XMPP account for people and to install the app. To them it was as if it came preinstalled and ready to go on their device. Lot of work on our end but i'm down to only two people I have to call or SMS.

@downey> Matrix bridges, so you need to only run one account to communicate with them allI know this is a thing but I have no idea how to get it working. Do you know of a good HowTo? Plus don't you need an account on each service you want to use with a bridge? @asahi95 @thedaviddelta

@thedaviddeltaThe only thing that makes Signal different from proprietary chat apps is that they publish source code under a free license. It's still a centralized service that insists you use their binaries, of their client apps. Plus, since they won't make reproducible builds, how do we know if their published code is actually what's compiled in those binaries? How do we know their servers are running the published code if we're not supposed to connect using independent clients?@asahi95
