       @onan I learned recently that Egyptian hieroglyphics can be read in any direction, from left, right, top or bottom, based purely on the writer’s aesthetic preferences. You know how to read it by which way the birds mouths are pointed. This let them use letters less as communication and more as graphic accoutrement. If they were pressed for space, they just put the graphical hieroglyph they were writing, wrote a line under it, and the picture WAS the word.
