       What's the story with submarines protecting undersea cables?  They are thousands of km long, aren't they?The Baltic is full of subs, I believe, from multiple navies, but they couldn't stop the sabotage of the Nordstream pipeline, or even detect the culprits after the pipeline.

       @Nickbin @johnquiggin you sent me down a rabbit hole to find out what the RAN thinks is needed, and found this from July 2021 (yes, literally months before Scotty cancelled the French deal), and the RAN was extolling the benefits of the "future subs" - French at the time - but shows also shows a focus on UUVs, surface vessels (Arafura-class OCVs), sensor networks, and aircraft https://www.navy.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/MERCATOR_2040.pdf
