Which #linux packaging format do you prefer? My choice is usually #rpm but in some cases I prefer #Flatpak because of #flatseal that makes app permissions easy to manage. And many apps are only available as a Flatpak (or the rpm doesn't work well like the Kdenlive rpm from #rpmfusion lol) #appimage is also pretty decent with #appimagelauncher installed. But I avoid #snap at all cost because #snapstore is proprietary.#packaging #package #deb #fosserytech

@fosserytech Also snaps sometimes don't have access to the other fs' and are waaayy slower than other packages which is super annoying

@fosserytech I use all of them. Simply put, I use whatever works for me (and I don't preach for one packaging format just cause the rest of the community does it)#Snaps work (they aren't slow in my experience), #Flatpak works very well, #AppImages somewhat work, heck even #deb packages work tooThis is my own experience, your experience may vary depending on your use case, preferences, or hardware specs

@fosserytech I prefer getting a package from my distros repo regardless of format but if I have to get it from elsewhere I have taken a liking to Flatpak.

@fosserytech option 5: source code and makebut yeah, I avoid snap altogether, I try not to use appimage but will use it if it's an app I only have to rarely use and am forced into it. flatpak is OK, I pretty much have only ever used it for games.

@fosserytech Traditional preferred, then AppImage if I need a more current version and/or it's a more complex project than a quick build from source

@fosserytech I have on more than one occasion, dissected an application distributed only via Flatpak within a vm, grabbed its compiled binaries and shared libraries out of /var/lib/flatpak and put together my own script with the correct LD_PRELOAD vars to repackage for a machine where needed without having to suffer through the gigabytes worth of dependencies and overhead of dealing with Flatpak I don't want on my machine whatsoever.I found it very annoying.
