What's the biggest band you can think of where, if they broke up after their first album, they'd barely be a footnote? Was thinking of this while listening to XTC. If their legacy was White Music, 40+ years later it'd be "that exists, weird?". Like Fashion or something. But like Led Zeppelin and Talking Heads are 2 bands who definitely would still be remembered if they all died in a plane crash after the 1st record

@pingviini that's interesting and so impossible to think of now, but...maybe? It did hit #36 on the billboard charts and Rolling Stone called it the best album of 1983 - think about that, better than Thriller or Synchronicity. I dunno maybe it would be revered like the first Television album. It's an interesting suggestion for sure.

@WizardOfWor The R.E.M. that conquered the world and whose songs live on in the memories of people who weren't even around in the 80s only started with Document

@pingviini thats true. But again I'm thinking completely forgotten. Like ever heard of "The Popular Sex"? They're completely forgotten. But! You've heard of Television. And they never conquered the world at all

@WizardOfWor (I haven't actually heard or heard of Television, just scrubbed through Marquee Moon and don't remember ever hearing a single song of that album anywhere)I guess there's degrees of "barely a footnote", true
