With #Flathub planning to add payments, donations and subscriptions, it seems a lot of people are worried they might turn corporate, and gain too much power on the #Linux app distribution side of things. While I generally find centralization to be a bad thing, in this case, I feel it carries no risk of creating a problem in the future. So, here's why I think that, no, Flathub isn't going to turn "evil" or "corporate" just because they add payments to the platform.https://youtu.be/MysPjElfpok

@thelinuxEXP Haven't watched the video yet. But the potential here is that the next step is that the donations are no longer optional. There is a huge danger here. While I don't mind paying for good software, commercializing an otherwise free platform is usually NOT a good thing.

@arnandegans There is absolutely NO chance of that happening. Just because you can donate doesn’t mean all developers will charge for their apps.

@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social Honestly, my only complaint with flathub is that they allow proprietary software. This wouldn't be a big deal, but there's no other repo that only has free software. Like how we have distros with 100% free software, I wish we had the same luxury for flatpaks.

@charadon @thelinuxEXP I'm honest-to-goodness curious what problem offering proprietary packages causes? The assumption on my part is that a chance to compensate the devs for their package doesn't take away the current license indicator that classifies software as proprietary or #opensource so we can keep our systems untainted [if that's the goal].

@charadon @thelinuxEXP you may have missed part of the recent Flathub announcement: a FOSS-only filter for the remote! This means anyone who wants (e.g. individuals or distros) can treat the FOSS-only subset of Flathub as its own remote.Flathub absolutely wants to promote FOSS above other apps, but they're also being pragmatic: you can't realistically grow an ecosystem if FOSS is a hard req, because users will ALWAYS have to go somewhere else to get the apps they need for school, jobs, etc.

@suquamish@noc.social @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social I just don't want proprietary software on my system, that's all. And if repositories offer it, it increases my chances of accidentally installing it. Not saying flathub shouldn't have proprietary software, just saying I wish we had a repo of just free software.

@charadon @thelinuxEXP Gotcha. If you're passionate about this, you can always try hosting your own repository that only contains #foss: https://docs.flatpak.org/en/latest/hosting-a-repository.html(which is one of the reasons why I like #Flatpak over #Snap)

@suquamish@noc.social @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social Man, I wish I had the resources to host my own FOSS flatpak repo. Unfortunately, me poor lol
