The #TikTok news reaction is fascinating.Asia #HumanRights activists/#China experts - mostly positive.US #DigitalRights groups/experts - mostly negative.I'm in the middle but my sympathies obviously lie with the former. I'd have more respect for the latter if they took China's state-led #disinformation campaign, massive #surveillance and #censorship apparatus & rising digital power more seriously.

@ncoca China's (and US' own) state-led disinformation campaigns were primarily proven to be conducted via #meta and #twitter so far. Data surveillance and interception, including US citizens, are happening on both US and China's networks (see what became of #wikipedia lawsuit, #snowden revelation, 2016 doc Zero Days). Both countries do practice #censorship of their own choosings; even 'better' democratic nations like NZ had to censor a video of anti-muslim shooting, after all.

@ncoca Let's say a US company managed to acquire #tiktok. How will it actually help regular citizens to elude #government #surveillance? How will a government that uncannily persists to fail at regulating disinformation on #twitter, #gab, #truthsocial, #facebook, #instagram, #youtube, #reddit be any more effective at regulating #tiktok once acquired?

@ncoca And does the acquiring company (which is likely for-profit private) have the political will of combatting surveillance on behalf of their users, like what #Wikimedia or Internet Archive attempted to do? Even if it did, would it finally merit attention and care from #SCOTUS, unlike what happened to Wikimedia a month ago?https://www.reuters.com/legal/us-supreme-court-snubs-wikipedia-bid-challenge-nsa-surveillance-2023-02-21/
