A couple of articles I found on Mastodon this past weekend have me thinking about the practicality of my weaving degree. #weaving @clive @pluralistic https://maryewarner.com/2023/03/14/on-the-practicality-of-a-weaving-degree/

@clive @pluralistic Thanks, Clive, glad you like it! I was so surprised to see Cory's article right after yours. Not often I see articles on weaving on social media.

@maximum_mew @pluralistic It's a pretty cool convergenceI want to read that new book on the LudditesI've been obsessed with them ever since I spent a few weeks researching them for this Smithsonian column a few years back: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/when-robots-take-jobs-remember-luddites-180961423/

@clive @maximum_mew @pluralistic If my memory is correct, the French lace industry is in serious need of Luddites. A few years ago I remember reading/discussing that it was getting extraordinarily difficult to fix, maintain, and use the looms due to lack of knowledgeable, experienced staff. They were starting apprenticeship programs, but they were behind the curve. Needless to say, I'm a Luddite fan!(There's a similar issue w/companies doing plissage. So much knowledge getting lost.)

@clive @maximum_mew @pluralistic I found a recent video that lightly touches on the topic, plus has some good info/scenes of the process and machines.

@clive @pluralistic Excellent article on the Luddites, Clive! That was one thing I didn't get with my weaving degree ... a history of weaving or important events related to it. Heck, one of my work-study assignments had me photographing women's art out of books so they could be used as slides for teaching in art history classes. Most of the slides to that point featured only men's art.

@maximum_mew @clive @pluralistic I really appreciated this post. I also think it's a shame that universities are now essentially treated as trade schools. There is certainly a place for both, and trade schools are valuable for folks who want specific training to get a specific job, but the value of a university education is supposed to be the enhanced background of knowledge you gain that makes you a more educated individual overall, compared to high school. It's not about job training.

@kyle @clive @pluralistic That is exactly the point a friend of mine made on LinkedIn in response to my post, Kyle. College is for opening the mind, not just job training. Though, ironically, if I had taken the weaving course in an earlier era, it probably would have been job training.😁

@maximum_mew @clive @pluralistic Thank you a million for these pieces. Though never a weaver, I am an enthusiastic knitter and my devotion to the anachronistic world of horses perhaps make me an honorary Luddite. High school English Thomas Hardy first introduced the Luddites, or maybe our teacher's work to give Hardy context.A grad school lecture/demo by Laurel Ulrich of Midwife's Tale fame, awakened my interest in weaving. She used a flat linen crib sheet, first woven as (what passed for) a full sheet in the early 1800s to demonstrate the labor story Doctorow tells. (He's been on a roll lately, BTW.)I'll never forget the feel of the one remaining original, almost invisibly hand-hemmed, edge. The rest of the piece had been cut down and variously home-machine hemmed and patched over the last 100-ish years. Though those were interesting too, the capacity for the original linen hemming to survive into the 21st century blew my mind.

@maximum_mew @clive @pluralistic I am delighted to see this sentence:“The workers tried bargaining. They weren’t opposed to machinery, they said, if the profits from increased productivity were shared”Every misuse of the word ‘Luddite’ is an opportunity to have a good conversation about who they were, what they stood for, and how relevant they remain.
