15 March 1948 | District Military Court in Warsaw sentenced to death Col. Witold Pilecki, officer active in the underground. In 1940 he voluntarily submitted to arrest & deportation to the German camp Auschwitz to gather information about the camp. @auschwitzmuseum I remember this one from a birdsite post a while back. There was a lot of confusion why he was executed in 1948 by the Polish Military. I think the Soviets had a hand in that?It isn't clear from this post (again) and the online lesson doesn't even mention the execution.

@auschwitzmuseum Executed? Why? Wasn't he trying to gather information in the camp? And in 1948?!? Wasn't the war over then? For what reason was he executed?

@auschwitzmuseum Interesting. This post left me unsure who was responsible for Pilecki's death, although the linked document says it was the Communists.which unfortunately makes sense.
