This student's laptop is the bane of my life. She comes to school with it on an outdated version of macOS, disk is too full to get it to update. Get her to clear stuff, still won't update. I try to update with a USB installer, need password. She gives me the password, the password doesn't work

She wrote a 4 down in the password as a character that looks a lot like a Y... sigh… must be a Spanish thing!

And I still need another 10GB of space. 128GB storage Macs need to die. In desperation, I'm moving her photo library to an external disk temporarily so I can have the space to run the upgrade.

@Erased_Citizen My older macs (128GB drive) would be completely unusable if I didn't have a NAS and VPN back to my house. I'm fine pretending an iPhone or iPad is a cloud-first device, but not something sold as a laptop.

This copy operation is still going. Another 10 GB to go before I can even start the update process. And the student is going to come at 4pm expecting it to be all done. I can guarantee she'll be impatient too and insist on taking it again so yet another day wasted.

Absolute bastard of a laptop. As I was leaving work, the copy operation was in it’s finally couple of gigabytes. Only the external drive was knocked slightly and disconnected. 😡
