Many writers have had profound impacts on my life, but two live in my head constantly:Arthur Koestler and Ian BanksLike optometrists slotting lenses into my field of vision, they both fundamentally changed the way I understand the world. Which writers have changed you at a fundamental level?

Ian Banks left me with an awareness of life-span and its impact on consciousness. Now I never come to a conclusion without asking myself 'how would I feel about this if I only lived for a year, or for 500 years?'Also, 'The Use of Weapons' completely changed ... well, the way I think about almost everything.

@Remittancegirl Use of Weapons is my favourite book in any genre, and Iain Banks is very much one of my 2. The other one would be Daniel Kahnemann, who wrote "Thinking, Fast and Slow", which I've only just finish reading.

Koestler is far more personal. But his ideas about ideology and the origins of heroism have had a huge effect on how I 'read' people.

@chrisgn @Remittancegirl I feel the title lets it down a bit - at least when trying to sell it to a friend. "Have you read Use of Weapons?" is often met with the same kind of look I get when I ask, "Are you watching Seal Team??"

@akleewrites @Remittancegirl It's really well written and easy to read (for a book on psychology), but it took me a while to get through it even so (I rarely read non-fiction). It's very worth it though I think!

@chrisgn @Remittancegirl I've just started Thinking Fast and Slow. I'm pleased to see it's research-based. Some of Iain Banks' novels impressed me a lot, so I'll give Use of Weapons a try.
