Hello #WritingCommunity! Question: which fiction genre do stories about clairvoyance, empaths, psychic, and the like, fall under? #fantasy maybe? It's not #SciFi, right? Technically, there isn't a genre for the #Supernatural, but I suppose whatever genre #witchcraft fits in comes close. #Writing #genre

@EvergreenSoul it could depend on how the ability is explained - if given a scientific explanation it could be called soft SF (or steampunk if set in the past).But my first instinct is that if it’s set in the present world, it’s urban fantasy and if it’s set it in the past, it’s historical fantasy …

@wendypalmer @EvergreenSoul Would you class Neil Gaiman’s American Gods or Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell or Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast as fantasy? In a way they are, but they also transcend such pigeonholes by a very wide margin. It’s a little like calling Pride and Prejudice a gothic romance or bodice-ripper. 😎

@khoji @EvergreenSoulWell. Yes. I would class all three of those as being in various subgenres of fantasy, for the purposes of picking a category for sale/marketing purposes, which is what I assumed the question was about.

@wendypalmer @EvergreenSoul My point is that only formulaic works really fit accurately in a category. Really good books generally transcend categories, and classifying them hides more than it reveals.
