Docker Inc would like to thank the open source community for making registry successful. As a token of appreciation open source organizations are invited to subscribe to the paid version in the next month, or their data will be deleted.

I believe the correct course of action is to start distributing containers via ActivityPub

@eschnett using bittorrent to distribute images within a cluster is not outrageous!

@justizin @eschnett It worked quite well for distro of ISO images. This feels the same.

@rtyler I've never trusted Docker, I expected something like this to come, and I'm not surprised now that it's come.Time to move to podman or systemd-containerd, I guess.

@rtyler #Docker has been a prime example of #OpenWashing for a while. This move is, sadly, no surprise.#RedHat is still a tad more careful with #Ansible, and will likely remain so for a while. Still, it's clearly #OpenCore, which is just a slightly more acceptable version of the same problem.#Kubernetes is a good example of a slightly different approach. Instead of being open core itself, it's an open framework for a component ecosystem that permits vendor-locked parts.

@rtyler With Docker being part of that ecosystem and now dumping its #FOSS users, there is a high chance that other #k8s component vendors will follow suit.TL;DR is, major #DevOps tools are to be treated with caution. It's been a smart move of this industry to convince folks that running web servers is hard, so you need tools to manage them.

@rtyler it is thoroughly unsurprising that this is happening. In the end every company wants to be '90s Microsoft.

You can use Podman. You can also extract the Docker image and run it in a chroot. I don't think the kids these days realize Docker is an over glorified chroot.
