@BrodieOnLinux well you see, uh, rooting is a term from back in the day when the first computers were powered by uh wild boars on giant hamster wheels. When they'd stop to go rooting for food that's when they came up with the terminology.

@BrodieOnLinux Yikes. Curious if you have feelings about the term "jailbreak/jailbreaking", too. Personally not a fan of that term, generally.

@Akiko Rooting literally just means getting root access, does jailbreak have an older meaning associated with it?

@BrodieOnLinux 🤔 I guess this might change if distros like Fedora Silverblue and Vanilla OS become more mainstream, given that they have immutable filesystems.

@BrodieOnLinux @Akiko You know how when the word "jailbreak" is used to describe when one or more prisoners escape imprisonment (and carries unspokens assumption that prisoners locked up probably did something to deserve it, so this shouldn't happen; it's treated as a literal crime by authorities)?Well, the term maybe carries the same subtext when un-walled-gardening an Apple device so it acts like a computer instead of a TV shopping channel with Helvetica and without lowbrow associations.
