I just got a jury summons, and I'm kind of freaking out. I don't trust them to enforce their mask rules.Has anyone here done jury duty, and if so, was the court stringent about enforcing the published "everyone has to wear a mask" rules?

@grammargirlI never saw any official rule about it but most people wore masks when I did jury duty in January.

@grammargirl I suggest logging into their site and pushing it as far into the future as possible. If I remember correctly, it can be a full year. Also, holidays tend to be much slower. There is a smaller chance of being requested for service around Christmas and New Year.

@vpermar Thanks! That's what I"m debating. I can defer once for 6 months, but right now they require masks, and I can imagine they might not in the future. Rates aren't horrible now, but I'm 4 months out from my last booster, and if I defer, maybe I could get a booster a few weeks beforehand. But rates could be a lot higher in the future. I just don't know!

@grammargirl N95 respirators are available from Grainger or Amazon. I like the 3M Vflex, but the Aura is also popular. I find the N95s breath easier than surgical masks (larger surface area) and are more comfortable because they don’t push against your nose or lips.

@statesdj I usually wear KN95s (from Maskc https://www.shopmaskc.com/collections/kn95-masks), but Pat recently bought a bunch of N95s, so I'll play with them to see if I can get one to fit right. So far, I have found them much harder to fit than the KN95s.

@grammargirl I did, and the court did, including the defendant, who was told to wear his mask over his nose or get a nice set of shackles. If they don’t enforce the rules, there are about a zillion ways to get out of jury duty.

@grammargirl I was able to find a corner to hide in last time, and luckily did not get called for a case, but it appears that just like in so many other settings that the pandemic is over for those that can’t be bothered.

@grammargirl This was in Santa Fe, last year. If you see something that concerns you, send a question (usually written) to the judge, by way of the bailiff.

@grammargirl When I had jury duty last spring, there were signs everywhere at the courthouse strongly encouraging masks. This was a stronger notice than I'd been led to believe would be there when I called the jury administrator to ask what precautions they were taking. I was just told that the jury pool would be smaller than normal (it was) and that there would be plenty of space to spread out (there was). (New Haven County, Connecticut)

@grammargirl If you're self-employed, or an essential worker for your company, you can get out of it. I hate to do that, but it's not really set up for people who aren't employees.

@aliceq That's good to hear. That's similar to what they say here. The pool is supposed to be smaller, and fewer people are called, and masks are required.

@nebunez @grammargirl I did both grand jury for dc superior and petit for dc district court. Grand jury enforced masks at all times, but district was optional. It will probably depend on the state, though.

@grammargirl Probably not much help at this point, but: In Orlando in November 2020 (so, way pre-vaccine), everyone masked as required--except whenever a group was about to be taken upstairs to the courtrooms. They made us REMOVE our own masks and put on new ones with transparent front panels, IN THE JURY POOL WAITING ROOM--couldn't duck outside or anything. I didn't get sick but I'm still angry. (I wasn't chosen, so I don't know about during actual trials, even back then.)

@davidhooper It's funny. In the FAQ, it says something like "You may think you can be excused because you are self-employed. You cannot." You can ask for a one-time, 6 month deferment, but you only get one, so if you really, really need it next time, tough luck.

@grammargirl I feel like they told me something similar when I got called, but I tried anyway and got an "off the hook" text. I wasn't worried about getting in there for a couple of weeks, but it did concern me that it might be longer. And I agree that masking is an issue now. But these guys don't want you getting sick as it would disrupt the process, so at least there is that.

@grammargirl That's awesome if they're actually expecting mask-wearing because virtually everywhere here in Canada has given it up, including the blood donor clinic and all seniors' programs. I got a summons in the fall and used my 65+ exemption to get out of it. I've always wanted to serve on a jury but not enough to wind up with a lifelong disability. Quarters are tight in most courtrooms.

@grammargirl I went to jury selection panel in Hawaii about a year ago. No, we weren’t outdoors under palm trees as we were in a government building like any other. They enforced masks and distancing. Wear a good mask (KN95/N95), glasses to protect eyes if that worried, and bring hand sanitizer.
