Found an old 80GB ATA HDD in the basement, it still seems to work, it spins up and doesn't make any weird noises, but the external USB enclosure it was in doesn't. Too bad, I would have liked to see what is on that disk.

Not really worth it to spend 10-20€ on an ATA to USB adapter.

@amerika Not sure if it's worth spending 10-20€, if I do not even know if there are even any files on that disk.

@InsignificantThoughts@uwu.social I actually bothered to find out. Found 6 old IDE drives, got a cheap adapter, span them all up, only one still worked and it had nothing on it I cared about.

@Lux Oh, that's disappointing.I probably won't buy an adapter, but I also found an old 233MHz Pentium II PC, so if that still works it's something I could try. That's a big IF though, cause I am not sure that box can even boot from CD, so even if just the OS is isn't working, I can't create a boot floppy to fix it. I think I do still have a PS2 keyboard though.

Turns out the ATA to USB adapter works after all, it was just the USB cable that was broken...Also that 20yo 80GB HDD did not contain many interesting files, Sims 3, Icewind Dale II, GTA, RPG Maker games and a few PDFs. In the recycle bin I found some music and files from a FlyFF and Maplestory private server. Seems like I last used this HDD in 2009. Which makes sense, because around 2010 I bought a new computer with two 1TB drives.

Oh, and a 9 part rar file, that has read errors like "critical medium error, dev sdb, sector 2579295 op 0x0:(READ) flags 0x80700 phys_seg 1 prio class 2" when I try to read it.
