Do you think there are people who are really mad that the player character in Animal Crossing New Horizons is referred to with they/them pronouns?

One time I saw a review of Verdant Skies, another game where the main character uses they/them pronouns, that said the game "robs you of gender", which is pretty fucking funny.

@BathysphereHat That's absurd.I take they/them in games, barring explicitly nonbinary characters, as letting me fill in the blanks as I see fit. It's not robbing me of gender, it's giving me gender that I can mold to my wishes.

@Archivist @BathysphereHat Technically the Asari in Mass Effect, too. I'm hoping to see some in the next Mass Effect that, while not being gendered any differently than other Asari, get really mad at other species for assuming they are women, when that concept is entirely foreign to their own culture.

@Archivist @BathysphereHat If they ran with the Asari gender situation to its logical conclusion, there would be some that are mad about that.

@Archivist @BathysphereHat A coincidental resemblance to a specific gender among other species does not mean you are that gender, of course.

@anniethebruce @Archivist Oh yeah, for sure. We can even see on Earth that there are many male animals who look more "feminine" than their female counterparts. Of course, that gets complicated, because I doubt they really have an idea of gender at all?

@BathysphereHat @anniethebruceI am not very knowledgeable about birds, but some people give gender to some insects for which questions of male/female are kinda not relevant, same for flowers and plants

@Archivist @BathysphereHat In birds, at least most species, the males are far more colorful and decorated than the females. Most species, it's the other way around.
