Perhaps that was not the right word to use. I meant to say that artificial intelligence that can write its own software will have an exponentially increasing effect. It is a little scary to think about, but AI cannot understand abstracts. It can spit out something that one may quantify as abstract in an image or text but the meaning behind it will always be decided by humans. Robots cannot understand subjective reasoning. They can try to emulate it based on input but grasping the concept is not possible. I would almost argue that AI that is programmed to do one thing and one thing only would be more dangerous than one that accepts input to return a result.

That makes sense, apologies Matty.I say that’s a sensible conclusion all in all, but I’ve always been of the mind that any AI programmed to do anything would be dangerous in the first place. The fact that we have machines that can talk back to us in a matter of seconds is startling. I think we’ve stumbled onto a technology that not only are we too immature to be handling but it just shouldn’t exist in the first place. It’s going to be used to play into the hands of evil people.

I think the ones that accept input are primarily the "training" AI you're talking about. These publicly-used AI are trying to understand things like human curiosity, social nuances, etc. They won't be able to reason subjectively but the goal may be to build such a comprehensive database of potential interactions that they can simulate it with a terrifying amount of accuracy

Machines already give births to machines. No one physically puts 0s and 1s into a storage medium, and no one has for decades. Each machine can be traced back to some machine before it. Here what would be significant is if a machine could recompile itself, or even recompile parts, and merely change the difference via comparison, similar to how we splice dna. Once a machine can identify portions of its code it wants replaced and replace it is when it'll get interesting.

By my understanding, the model is trained on actual law, statutes, etc - not by any news based reporting.Regardless, representation in court and practicing law is literally dealing with a fluid flow chart developing arguments and counter arguments, based on law, precedent, etc - a properly trained computer can provide the same function as a human.

Why rely on a human? What's the difference between a lawyer being utilized for their expertise and training in law vs an AI trained in the same? Or even lawyers using a model to create the best bomb proof arguement? You can ask the same about a judge - it all would come down to acceptability.

How could you determine that one would be mistrained/programmed? I could make the same argument that a lawyers strategy to win the case was flawed because of their poor training. The intent is using the AI as your source of legal expertise in self representation - the same function of a lawyer, just in digital form - there is no need for consciousness in this function, only credible output for the client and court to accept.

You could make the same argument with a lawyer, but it falls flat. Lawyers are conscious. Thus, you can't just point to programming and training. The practice of law is an art form. And that may include advising clients about everything from what the opponent or judge is likely to to given their specific proclivities to the consequences of not complying with law at all. Anyone who thinks law can be found in precedent is missing the forest. Law is political, not legal. AI cannot deal with such a subtlety. AI may be able to help me find cases though, but I'm not convinced it'll be much faster than westlaw already is. I actually think AI is better suited to the practice of medicine, since medicine has moved towards a testing range / check the box order of procedure where every patient is fungible.

A guy came to one of our groups to talk about his tech legal consulting and it was asked:-What about chain of custody?-What about file system integrity (date stamps, etc.)?-What about network logs?Consultant:>Yeah, judges don't give a shit about any of that, at least in these tech cases

I have concerns alone with westlaw (rueters) being used by nearly every court in the country. They choose the practice guides, they notate and organize the cases. They also own the AP. Who knows how they're already manipulating law. If a judge sees a red flag on a case, will he discount it even if it's good law and westlaw was wrong. Will the judge only look at practice guides when rendering a decision? Who wrote it? Is it biased?
