Ugh my gosh I can’t wait till Mastodon at least supports freaking Markdown so people can stop using mathematical latin italic capital u mathematical Latin italic lowercase n Mathematical Latin italic lowercase i Mathematical Latin italic lowercase c Mathematical Latin italic lowercase o Mathematical Latin italic lowercase d Mathematical Latin italic lowercase e Mathematical Latin italic lowercase t Mathematical Latin italic lowercase e Mathematical Latin italic lowercase x Mathematical Latin italic lowercase t.Yeah. You feel that? The need to concentrate and pick out each individual letter and then reconstruct the word? That’s how I feel whenever I hear that in a username or post. You know what I do when I hear that? I skip it. Social media simply needs formatting tools. At least italics, bold, and underline. At least then screen reader will just read the post. Oh it won’t speak the formatting unless forced to cause blind people don’t need to know formatting /s but it’ll be bearable to listen to.

@devinprater Mastodon internally supports HTML for post bodies, so as client app developers we should *absolutely* be leveraging that.

@sam Oh wow, just a little … well I don’t know how little a Markdown to HTML convert would be, but a little converter that just optionally runs the post through it before posting would be amazing then!

@devinprater @sam Markdown is designed to be converted to HTML so you have converters for every language. The main drawback of MD is that it doesn't have a standard per se but if you stick to a de-facto standard like CommonMark you should be good: https://commonmark.org/

@brunogirin @devinprater @sam I'd also like to point out that most micro blogging fedi software I know actually allows basic markup like italic, bold, underline, lists... Mastodon not supporting it, is really the odd one out. And what's even worse, mastodon just strips everything away. So if you send a list to mastodon, it will just strip it away and all the bullet points will be on one line pasted together.

@sam @LLS @brunogirin @devinprater Yes, but now that you asked, I also looked again, and the "lists" problem is apparently worked-around since a couple of years already, I didn't know. https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/10836 I mean, still not supported, but at least it seems mastodon keeps the list items on different lines now, which is at least better than what I still believed it was.
