Meta bought Kustomer for $1 billion last year. It was amongst their largest acquisitions ever.Now they're getting rid of it.Kustomer was supposed to help Meta offer customer service through WhatsApp and Messenger apps. And people wonder why I'm optimistic regarding Meta's move into the Fediverse!Look at what shape Meta is in at the moment: they're just got rid of a company that they bought for $1B.This isn't a company trying to dominate. It's a company trying to survive.

@atomicpoet I got the impression from the BBC article Meta is planning something independent but still using Activity Pub, so not sure if it will be federating with us.We need more details, but Meta yes, are trying to survive, as we are a direct threat to them, and the lack of data collection, abuse, sale etc etc is actually appealing to people. We can be ourselves without some algorithm following us and dictating what we see.

Absolutely, Meta "intends" to join the Fediverse because the Fediverse is hot.Yes, they will try to "embrace, extend, extinguish" -- much like they always do.What they will discover is a community that is hostile to them, a developer ecosystem that will out innovate them, and competitors hungry to eat them alive.But let them try 😄

@zleap It looks like a text-focused service that will allow people to log in via Instagram.If that's the game plan, they will definitely fail.

@IronCurtain @zleap @atomicpoet it just occurred to me they thought we were the predator for some reason, and Meta was the prey. I got it backwards. But I also got it correct. That company is vulture vampire that feeds on anything it can, or perceived as weaker than itself.

@spandauAnders @IronCurtain @atomicpoet Indeed, hence I suggested, if they come here, they will find we are more than ready to defend our way of undertaking social networks, our 'Fediverse lore' so to speak. We need to be ready, hence I asked about if we can make it easier to set uploaded media to a specific license, like we can on peertube

@spandauAnders @atomicpoet We know they are coming, we know their MO (Modus operandi) so we just make sure we are ready, and not asleep at the wheel should they join and try and do a massive data / IP grab on what user info there is.

@atomicpoet Isn't the idea of these acquisitions to acquire intellectual property etc, the human employees just end up as collateral.
