People probably don't know how locked-down NY area is; when you get a nuclear stress test (which I just did), you get injected with lightly radioactive dye. And even the super-low amount is enough that cop cars and the scanners coming into NYC will go "check that person, they're radioactive". You get a card to show the cops.

@textfiles Some years ago I also had a nuclear stress test and they told me about the very short half-life of the isotope that was going to be injected into me. I asked them if that was the case, how did they manage to keep any in stock?"They deliver it every day." I could see that they don't often get that questions. So them I ask them "So, how do you focus gamma rays so you can produce an image?" That "look" returned. "Sir, just please lie still."Still not sure how that works. I later learned how some of the orbital X-Ray telescopes do this, but that required pretty large structures..

@lmamakos @textfiles Grazing-incidence mirrors can be used for focusing X-rays and gammas. They're quite fascinating, paraboloids of revolution made up of multiple very thin layers of various metals. But for radiography procedures, it's normally done the other way around, by integrating measurements from a number of sensors. An early form of "cosmic ray telescope" involved a stack of Geiger tubes, set up with "coincidence detectors" to trigger only on a ray passing through all of them.

@textfiles You say it's lightly radioactive, but my other half just had a similar thing done (scintillography-directed lymph node dissection) and she was radiating about a year's background dose every two hours. Of course, a year's background dose is only about three millisieverts, which is a tiny amount in the grand scale of things, but it isn't at all surprising that portal monitors on transit might pick it up.
