Driving with 2 people costs $7 round trip in road fare plus $25B/yr from the stateTransit with 2 people costs ~$20 round trip in train fare plus $2B/yr from the stateTrain frequency and cost is this bad because of how little we invest in it

Transit fares are too damn high, and transit frequencies are too damn lowTrading off one for the other just adjusts which demographic benefits the most from a tiny morsel of fundsThe only sustainable solution is transit investment at the same scale as our investment in cars so we can have both affordable and frequent transit

@bryanculbertson I don't understand how people in charge of transit agencies fail to realize that FREQUENCY is the most important criterion. Small, FREQUENT vehicles are preferable to large, infrequent ones. Slow, FREQUENT vehicles are preferable to fast, infrequent ones. Because ultimately, what counts in transit is being able to get where you need to get, when you need to be there, and then back within the time you have available.

And if we don't figure this out within the next decade our planet burns, so let's jump to it

@publius A lot of time the people in charge of transit agencies are trying to squeeze as much as they can out of a very small budget, and are left having to make hard choices like poor frequencies as better than dropping service entirelyI place the blame on elected officials who have decided to give transit agencies such a small budget to work worth in the first place

@bryanculbertson A friend of mine went into a public hearing about a proposed extension of a transit rail line, which involved some digging. Many people complained that the trucks hauling away the spoil would disturb them. My friend proposed using trains for haulage, and the board members looked at her like she was from Mars. An engineer for the agency, who obviously hadn't been asked this before, did some quick estimates and said it would work.Few transit board members ride their services.

@publius that's a good point. The transit board members who ride transit are normal pretty good, the ones who don't ride transit have very little idea what they are doing
