@nano tons. phones are very limited. they may boast a bazillion megapixels, but there's not much you can do with those megapixels. being able to focus properly and having real glass lenses gives you way more creative possibilities. like, you can actually take a photo of the moon and have always been able to, unlike the tiny infinite-focus-only phone camera lense.

@crashglasshouses @nano Not really. Since the chips in phones are decent, they get creative with laying the optics sideways, giving you multiple cameras for different purposes, and the ability to get extra lens for macro phones can do pretty much anything a cheap camera can do.You can possibly get a good second hand camera that is better in something than your phone if you bother to search around for one, and know what it is that you want better than you already have.

@hramrach @nano a lot of it still software. you can add as many tiny lenses in parallel as you like, but you'll never get the level of optical zoom required for a clear picture of the moon that way, for the same reason that a hundred people lining up to look through a magnifying glass at a far-away object won't bring the object being looked at any closer. nevermind the fact that most camera apps won't even take advantage of things like manual shutter speed, (shitty) manual focus, and f-stop. you can't stop-down any shots because there is no actual shutter. there is a lot that simply cannot be done with a phone, no matter how many megapixels you shove into one.it's like AI: the people building this crap want you to believe that computers can perform any imagineable feat of impossibility because TV said they can. they'll stick a big number on stuff so unsuspecting, ignorant people will think "bigger number = better".

@crashglasshouses @nano I have both a phone and a cheap camera, and obviously the camera is better in some aspects. But I haven't bothered to take it out and put the batteries in for years because it is not better in any aspects that matter for lazy everyday photography. So yes, if you know what you want you can find a camera that does it better. For most people it does not make a difference. And it's an infinite money sink, too. There is always something better than what you have.

@hramrach @nano then why put maximum megapixels in a camera, or add more lenses? it seems like a huge waste if people don't care and just want to take pictures. they are trying to appeal to a group of people who, in their right minds, would never subsitute a dedicated camera for a phone.

@crashglasshouses @nano Some of it is marketing - they can claim higher number than competition. Some of it really improves something about the pictures that come out of the phone. I used my camera for a few years until my phone could make good enough pictures in the situations I cared about. And that happened only because the picture quality of phone photos has been improving over time.

@nano they most certainly are, but smartphone cam zooms suck. There was an Xperia that had an actual ZEISS zoom can, but that was eons ago
