Why I became a defense lawyer:Before law school (A few decades ago) I taught English at the college and university level. What I learned from teaching literature was that students had an easy time judging but a hard time being sympathetic.I agreed with John Updike that the purpose of literature is to expand our sympathies. And I'll admit that Atticus Finch and Clarence Darrow were two of my heroes.Prosecution felt easy, like judging.Defense was harder, requiring sympathy.1/

I also thought the most interesting and important questions were asked in criminal law:What behavior should we criminalize? (Not everything immoral is a crime). When do we use state power to punish people? What purposes are served by punishment and mass incarceration?2/

@Teri_Kanefield I was also inspired by Atticus Finch. And I always found it comforting to remind myself that he lost, and never had the slightest chance of winning.

@Teri_Kanefield There's also the problem of what to do with people after we determine they're bad or did bad things. They're still here. Reconciliation has to be part of the plan. Unless we're all signing up to serve as executioners or jailers.

@Teri_Kanefield Having started in literature, I considered law school, but decided instead on a PhD in communication and cultural studies. My passion was learning why people believed what they did, even when it wasn't in their best interests. How do our values, feelings, beliefs, and practices get embedded in everyday life? And how does change happen? Many years later, I still have so many unanswered questions.

@Teri_Kanefield I love the commentary on literature and it’s goal to makes up more sympathetic, but that is just one outcome of literature. The point of creating a creative piece is to make others think of find an abstraction; sympathy and empathy are just one destination, a critical mind is another the list is boundless. TY for the post and getting me to read and think.

@Teri_Kanefield Even as a non practicing attorney, I’ve always felt exactly the same way. There’s an imbalance in the system. I choose to root for the underdog.

@Teri_Kanefield Yes...they know the connect between Arts and empathy, their invisible enemy...that challenges the divisive hostile environment that fuels the Neo-Liberal agenda. Gotta hate, get a gun, fight your corner, damn Unions.Trust us, #foxnews
