Just used some downtime waiting for pax to create a Nostr account and experiment with the network/try the experience. From what I can tell it is essentially nothing but spam. Literally, nothing but spam posts advertising finance or cryptocurrency ploys.I understand this is a known problem with Nostr in its current state. I don't think paid relays or paid posts is a legitimate means of combating these problems. It will be interesting to see how Nostr handles problems like this as it evolves. I think the Fediverse has a much better handle over these issues simply by the nature of its organizational and functional structure.I do understand the appeal of having migratory identities. I know there are projects to provide capabilities like this to the Fediverse, and I think these developments are a good thing.

@adiz Someone forked Amethyst (the Android Nostr client I use) and implemented proof of work spam prevention in it. That might be an alternative to using money. Because I can see why you don't think money will help. Spammers generally are making money on their messages.>I think the Fediverse has a much better handle over these issues simply by the nature of its organizational and functional structure. How so?

@Hyolobrika@berserker.town How so?The server/user model vs. the relay/user model. One either implements some "proof" or "pay" model in order to vet all the users utilizing a said relay or pushing out messages. Otherwise, being free, a relay and node is prone to being used for spam purposes or inundated in spam. On the Fediverse, with the server/user model, servers are keen to self-moderate to prevent spam and therefore prevent being blocked. Similarly, if an instance is being used for spam purposes, it's easy to block the instance and users therein entirely vs. having to block, individually, each and every potential spammer by name from being able to propagate content.

@adiz The reason Nostr has a spam problem is because devs are trying to use Nostr for social media purposes. If developers realize that Nostr should be used for other purposes (I have several in mind), then spam would eventually become unnoticeable on Nostr.

@orthzar@liberdon.com Out of genuine curiosity, how would spam "eventually become unnoticeable" or otherwise we adequately tackled with Nostr's current operating model?

@adiz Most Nostr clients show all text notes from the relays you're connected to. Whitelists would help a lot, but that would be contrary to the purpose of social media: to drink from a firehose of content.Fortunately, Nostr is extremely flexible. You can easily use it for things unrelated to social media. For instance, I'm working on a way to build virtually uncensorable webpages on Nostr. The apps to display those webpages would appear similar to ordinary web browsers.

Just want to remind you that freenet is vastly superior to nostr for this purpose (and actually for social media as well). It arguably was created for uncensorable websites.ipfs is also better than nostr for this purpose.

@adiz well yea, i told everyone they are going to make joining a relay required "money" to combat spam since the system is extra prone to it

@dcc@annihilation.social Considering that Nostr was created by cryptobros (and Bitcoin maximalists) you could argue that spam on the network, and combating spam via payments (Zaps) is intentional and by design.

@dcc@annihilation.social oh we have this brand new protocol that's sssooo much better than activitypub and the fediverseit's "uncensorable"also it's full of spam, almost completelyand coincidentally you have to use micro-transactions of my favored cryptocurrency in order to bypass restrictions created in order to combat the epidemic of said spam thereby propping up my favored cryptocurrency
