Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov Satanic Panic Baking Extravaganza, Shoesale, and Fast@renai @Yellow_Heart @laurel So Renai and I have promised each other we would read the famous retelling of the time that the devil came to the Soviet Union's Moscow to rent a moderately-sized flat and put on a magic show for the delight of the local residents.Anyone else interested in the reading is encouraged to participate. I have included several different translations attached to the thread. I'm going to be reading a hardcopy of the Burgin and O'Connor. This thread will serve as a sort of "Midnight Lamp" for any thoughts or questions you may have about the reading, but it is in no way mandatory to participate by posting. Just a convenient space to share whatever thoughts we *do* have.I'm not certain how long it's going to take for us to get through it. I'm a fairly slow reader, so I'll provide regular updates for much progress I've been making. Maybe that can serve as a reference.Bulgakov, Mikhail - Master and Margarita (Ardis, 2011).jpgBulgakov, Mikhail - Master and Margarita (Ardis, 2011).epubBulgakov, Mikhail - Master and Margarita (Penguin, 2016).jpgBulgakov, Mikhail - Master and Margarita (Penguin, 2016).epubBulgakov, Mikhail - Master And Margarita (Penguin, 2007).jpgBulgakov, Mikhail - Master And Margarita (Penguin, 2007).epub

@Yellow_Heart @laurel @renai I had a feeling looking at that cover that it's most of the way to being a memecat already.

@kakkerelSounds fun, will this be a @FreeFediBookClub thing or just a hellthread(s) with no official questions? also i think we should choose one translation, so we can talk about the prose. id vote the p&v one in the penguin versions since it doesnt seem to differ much going by the first page and happens to have better footnotes.@Yellow_Heart @laurel @renai

@clayvaulin @FreeFediBookClub @Yellow_Heart @laurel @renai I've read the Volokhonsky before. Just getting through the first chapter of the Burgin, and I'm already picking up on the distinctions. I don't really have an opinion. I'd be happy just to get everyone who wanted all the way through the book. If I had to suggest, I think the Volokhonsky translation is superior; so if that's what you guys want to go with, it's fine with me.I didn't really plan to have any questions. So yeah. More like an informal hellthread.

@clayvaulin @Yellow_Heart @renai Up to page 26 in the Burgin. There's several reason I will fail to put into words how brilliant this is. The first chapter somewhat gleefully mocked the culture of disbelief and irreverence that is now the popular culture. Takes some swings as the media as well. I like how they still try to make Ivan Nikolayevich likeable at least in respect of being a fool.Chapter 2 is the devil's account of Christ's passion--or at least part of it. And it's the devil's account, so we can't be certain of which details he being genuine, but to the respect to which he seems to be choosing to be strikingly forthcoming are remarkable. All of this just to explain how Berlioz will have his head cut off.Behemoth

@Yellow_Heart @clayvaulin @renai "What are you saying, High priest! Who could possibly overhear us here? Do I look like the young, vagrant holy fool who will be executed today? I am I a boy, Kaifa? I know what I'm saying and where I'm saying it. The garden is cordoned off and the palace is too, so there's not even a crack for a mouse to squeeze through! And not just a mouse, but that, what's his name--from Kerioth. By the way, do you know such a person, High Priest? Yes... if someone like that were to get in here, he would regret it bitterly. You don't doubt what I'm saying, do you, High Priest? Yes... if someone like that were to get in here, he would regret it bitterly. You don't doubt what I'm saying, do you, High Priest? Know, then, that from now on you shall have no peace, High Priest! Neither you nor your people," Said Pilate, Pointing far off to the right, where the temple blazed at the heights. "It is I who am telling you this--Pontius Pilate, Knight of the Golden Spear!"..."Remember my words: what you will see here, High Priest, will not be one cohort in Yershalaim, oh no! The entire Lightning Legion will be at the city walls, so will the Arabian cavalry, and then you will hear bitter weeping and groaning! Then you will remember the Bar-rabban you saved and you will regret that you sent to death a philosopher who preached peace!"By fooling the gentiles into executing the savior, the jews enacted a vendetta against themselves, not merely of those whose hands were applied to the execution or those that governed them or even gentiles in general; the nature of reality itself has applied her hand to the vendetta. I will remember this. It's like, "For the sake of you, whom I already despise because of natural disgust for evil, I have applied my hands to the greatest sin I could conceivably have done. What makes you think that there is any place you can go to or any force you could call upon that would stop me from finding you?"

@kakkereli think the first chapters mocking was more towards the intellectual desire to conform to the party line and twist their craft into supporting it. the poet's disbelief is more similar to most modern atheism/nonbelief (apart from the new atheism cringelords) in its ability to recognize a historical jesus who existed and spread an inspiring message without divinity. the editor is like an intellectual in a politically charged field, i'm sure there were people like him in the soviet union based on my experiences listening to journos and professors on vaccines, ukraine and other political hot potatoes now, where even when i broadly agree with them their dishonesty feels icky.@Yellow_Heart @renai

@clayvaulin @Yellow_Heart @renai I'll catch up with you guys on the reading after the weekend. There's something interesting in what will happen to Berlioz and what will happen to Ivan Nikolayevich. And I think that fundamental distinction comes down to Ivan being a fool. Whereas for the psychology of a man like Berlioz, no such transformation is really possible.

@clayvaulin @Yellow_Heart @renai If I hadn't spent the last ten years manifesting a hazing remembrance of my inborn hatred for worldliness, I wouldn't be getting quite this much out of the reading.I just finished Chapter 7. @renai @Yellow_Heart @clayvaulin The doctor has fawning courtiers, which is amusing. But he's not a bad man. And he seems to ensure his patients are appropriately cared for.I rather like Ivan Nikolayevich. He's like most of us. He's been a fairly good elucidation of how insane you might look trying to rationalize the things that God and his servants can do, making covertly the argument that that all the scientific and mechanistic explanations trying to explain away what are basically divine works look more insane than simply saying, "God did it."

@kakkerel @Yellow_Heart @clayvaulin homeless isn't really even trying to rationalize anything, he's just describing exactly what happened to him without understanding how he'll be seen. i wonder how he'd look at someone telling him the same things if he was in the position of the listener.

@renai @Yellow_Heart @clayvaulin But Ivan is still acting like he encountered a man, explaining his experiences in the parlance of international crime and intrigue. It's funny, considering the period and the place. Not that he could so appropriately even conceive that the devil had done it. Even so, the atheist guards himself with a depiction of a saint stolen from an apartment.

@renai @Yellow_Heart @clayvaulin Chapter 13 was a rough read for me. Not that it was particularly difficult to read, but because of its poignancy. It's let I set out after reading this when I was 17 just to make myself the titular hero, for better and for worse.I feel like there's some Soviet deep lore going on in chapter 15 that I'm not really going to be able to penetrate.
