On the 21st of February Elon Musk promised Twitter's algorithm would be made open-source "next week", in a reply to Derek Smart[1].To be fair he also told him to "prepare to be disappointed", which rings quite true now that a whole week has passed and no open code has been released.Elon "Yeah Yeah Real Soon Trust Me I Promise It's Almost OK Just A Couple Kinks To Iron Out" Musk1: https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1628122949185159168

One more week has passed, still no open-source Twitter algorithm, Elon Musk is a bit more of a liar

One more week has passed, "the algorithm" has become "all code used to recommend tweets", but who am I to nitpick when the initial "next week" has turned into "next month". Still a liar, already making excuses. Let's call this the Full Self-Driving Effect.https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1636838845894279168

So… Twitter should release "all code used to recommend tweets" under an open-source license this week on the 31st. Elon Musk said so [1], and Elon Musk is another name for reliability. Nevermind his saying it would be released last month [2], Elon is reliable! What's this? There was some code leak? Some "FreeSpeechEnthusiast" leaked some Twitter code but it has quickly been taken down? Incredible [3]How dare you demand anything on the 31st, entitled brats! Twitter is going through a crisis right now, some scoundrel plundered the precious Code™ and you should understand nothing will move an inch until this issue is resolved (it won't be).1: https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/16368352095879495702: https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/16281229491851591683: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/bc-us-twitter-source-code-leak_n_6420e2f2e4b0b8ee3bd2c992

In a never-seen-before turn of events, an announcement by Elon Musk turned into actual things actually happening, Twitter has published the source code to its recommendation system: https://blog.twitter.com/engineering/en_us/topics/open-source/2023/twitter-recommendation-algorithm(of course the GitHub repository is getting thoroughly trolled, why would you ask?)

Why I call this the Full Self-Driving Effect:Adaptative cruise control has been available to the general public since 1998. Lane keeping assistance has been since the mid-2000. Tesla cars include these techs since 2015, quite late to the party. In early 2016 Elon Musk promised that "within two years it will be possible to remotely summon a Tesla from across the country." This means at most 2018. It didn't happen. In November 2022 the so-called "Full Self-Driving Capability" was rolled out as a public beta along with a promise to release the final version "a couple weeks" later. This software has proved to be quite a disaster, and its rollout has therefore been put on hold. But fear not, people who shelled out *checks note* 15 000 Freedom Bucks for vaporware, Space Jesus has promised[1] all your dreams will come true in May of this year! Rejoice!Or buy a Mercedes, a BMW, a Toyota, a Lexus, a Cadillac, a Ford, a Volkswagen, or an Audi. These brands are ahead of Tesla when it comes to driving assistance [2]. Especially Mercedes who secured the first level-3 autonomy approval in the USA [3].1: https://electrek.co/2022/05/22/elon-musk-tesla-self-driving-cars-without-human-driver-next-year/2: https://electrek.co/2023/01/25/ford-gm-consumer-reports-driver-assistance-rankings-tesla/3: https://www.theverge.com/2023/1/27/23572942/mercedes-drive-pilot-level-3-approved-nevada
