My son is a web security specialist and re ChatGPT and AI's newest forms, he says, "I have to say this technology is getting frighteningly advanced at a very very fast pace and it’s being unleashed to the public with little thought to security and the implications of such advanced technology being in the hands of literally everyone suddenly.” So what happens if it's hacked? It can be a powerful tool for misinformation, for propaganda, for provocateur activity.

@JohnShirley2023 I asked a chat bot to list 5 books by an author that I know for a fact wrote 3. Boom, there's 5 books, with good citation information, the false ones looking as legit as the known ones. A little laugh for me, bad info for anyone who didn't have the same background info. This year I've done hundreds of pages of 1:1 comparisons of on-paper source text & online transcribed text from the most popular free book sources... results not good.An old problem, getting faster.

@JohnShirley2023 May I bring you some more bad news? As far back as 2013 it was known that some photocopiers changed content from the source documents to the photocopy….https://www.dkriesel.com/en/blog/2013/0802_xerox-workcentres_are_switching_written_numbers_when_scanning

@JohnShirley2023 one more & then I will stop. A collector once gathered 1k+ editions of a book first published in the 1880s. I helped catalog that collection. All different. Not just covers and typesetting. A character or word here, some punctuation there, all different. Was the first edition the “real” text? Or the author’s preferred edition? Or the manuscript before publication? Or the one that you read first and like best?“Authenticity” is difficult in absolute best scenarios, much less…

@onan has to do with editions probably. I myself edit my books with every new edition--because they needed it.
