@stux don't forget New Horizons, and Pioneers 10 and 11 too! (the latter two are "dead" but do still exist)and, knowing our luck, Elon's Tesla monstrosity is somehow going to outlive us all too.

@stux They may. Or they may collide with a piece of cosmic debris. By the time the sun goes nova, they almost certainly will have. 🤷

@Eetschrijver They are soooo far away it won't effect them :blobcatgiggle: The chance of one of them hitting something in interstellar space is ALMOST 0% (never completly) but maybe at some point another star will catch them in a gravity well But our sun is no threat anymore fo them

@stux One of the accounts that I was happy came over to Masto was @NSFVoyager2 . The fact the Voyager probes are still out there reporting back, at least a few more years yet, is great.

@stux No, I don't mean the sun. I mean that by the time the sun goes nova, four billion years have passed. That's four billion (four million million) years of an almost zero per cent chance of colliding with debris. If I had four billion years to live, I'd probably win the big one in the lottery about a hundred thousand times. 😂

@stux nah, Elon's Monster is within Mars orbit I think. but it's there accidentally (too much thrust for too long), so my pessimism is thinking through bad luck it'll get a series of gravity assists that fling it out further where it will outlive us all 🤣

@paul @stux Thanks for mentioning the Pioneers and especially New Horizons--a spacecraft that will still exist long after the earth is cooked into a cinder and the sun becomes a dormant white dwarf (black dwarf?). New Horizons is extra special to me because there's a CD stuck to its side that carries my name & the names of 434,738 other humans. 🙂

@stux even if they don't. The whole thing is already impressive AF. Imagine you build something that works for 50 years without maintenance.
