If you’re an anarchist creating digital media (texts, zines, art, etc.) for other anarchists and don’t allow people to download copies for free, you’re excluding the least privileged. So congrats on reproducing the ills of capitalism.

@hakan_geijer you have a point, but this person has to stay alive, don't they? in this system, I think it should be okay as long as the artist gets the total compensation instead of some middleman. It sounds like the stupid rhetoric of "well you do this because you love this, so why not do it for free?"Full disclosure, I am not an artist, and I do not know what to do about the least privileged. Maybe they could be excluded from the payment scheme to level the playing field in a way.I am sorry in case of any misunderstandings.

@mamiofwind Oh I think it's totally fine to put a price tag that's "pay what you can." Just that should include "nothing." The people who don't have money for something aren't going to pay anyway, so why not just let them have it?

@hakan_geijer this can be abused too, especially on digital. If you can prove that you really can not pay it, sure, the creator should just make it available for you. This should be applied to people who can pay a small amount as you said. I think it would be hard to draw a boundary about that, but, for example, it could be set as x percentage of one's monthly gain.

@mamiofwind Everything can be abused, and restricting peoples ability to choose because someone else might do something marginally shitty isn’t going get us to a better world.

@hakan_geijer yea well. how about we start redistributing first and then do this second?

@mamiofwind Because spreading knowledge for free will aid in getting people behind the idea of redistribution. Also it's a thing we can do today, right now, without outside intervention that allows us to change our present relations.

@mamiofwind As a thought experiment, is The Dispossessed more an information work or an artistic work?

@hakan_geijer it's a fiction novel, so it carries more artistic flair than philosophical. Same with political songs.

@mamiofwind Ok, but I genuinely recommend that novel as an intro to anarchism over "political" texts because instead of getting into the details of what anarchism is, it shows a somewhat complete anarchist world. Which is to say, I don't think art and information can be so cleanly cut apart
