Spotify: 25000 people listened to your album, we’ll never tell you who they are and how they found you! Here’s $1.74. Bandcamp: 30 people bought your album and left a comment! Here’s $250.

@the_EffektMusicCoin and BitTunes are others I've heard of, at least one of which is a platform cooperative. TBH I've never used either, so I can't comment on their UX. I don't stream music often and when I do it's usually from BandCamp, or YouTube if I'm using someone's Dumb Computer (apps but no browser, eg "Smart TV" or gaming console).@edendestroyer @mnl

@mnl in other words spotify is better for privacy, why would they tell the artist who the listeners are

@edendestroyer @Apan @mnl perhaps so, but I’m not keen on the idea that every artist I listen to is entitled to know anything at all about me. Saying Spotify doesn’t tell every single band who I am isn’t souring me on it.

@bouncingPresumably BandCamp only has listener data about logged in users. You have the option of listening without logging in. Anyway the only data mentioned in the OP is sales numbers and comments.@edendestroyer @Apan @mnl

@strypey Yup, so far so good (I buy lot's of music through BC). But I would love to see an alternative platform to Bandcamp rise up. As an insurance when/if things go sideways. See: Comixology, owned by Amazon and for years it was doing fine, until they had to be merged into Kindle and the Amazon store. That was the moment I was out. But there is no other (worthwhile) alternative for digital comics. I hope digital music fares better.

@wjmaggos @mnl Someone did a comparison of interactions between Twitter and Mastodon. There were 10x the interactions per user with a toot than with the same content as a tweet

@strypey @edendestroyer @Apan @mnl OK, well let me ask you then, what service should I be using? I want:• Large catalog of music (Ala Spotify)• Wide device support• Curated playlists and algorithmic recommendations• SOME privacy (analytics and telemetry are fine, selling that data isn’t)Recommendations? I’m happy to switch away from Spotify, but I’m not sure just listening to music on Bandcamp is how I want to enjoy music?

@bouncingTBH I'm not the best person to ask. I still use my MP3s collection to listen to music and go to live gigs as much as I can manage. I like to check out CC music on Jamendo but sadly that's still a fairly narrow selection of artists. BC and YT are where I go for ARR music. I'm exited by the potential of FunkWhale though. @edendestroyer @Apan @mnl

@strypey I'm with Deezer. It works the best with the apps that can transfer playlists from Spotify to other services (Tidal had a 500 or so song limit...). Granted, the transfer isn't perfect, but it's very close. In some ways, Deezer is clunkier than Spotify, but it's not bad. And, if you buy music from Bandcamp, you can upload the MP3s to your own lists and listen acroos devices as part of your playlists, which is great. We moved January 2022, and happy as.
